Notes from the Night Shift - with Kim Palmer

There are women quietly changing the way other women experience their own minds.

Kim Palmer is one of them.

After navigating anxiety, panic attacks and a loss of confidence that nearly derailed her corporate career, Kim discovered cognitive hypnotherapy. What she learnt - slowly, honestly, imperfectly - became Clementine, a mindset app designed to help women with stress, sleep, anxiety and self-belief.

No shouting.
No fixing.
No “just optimise your morning routine” energy.

Just gentle rewiring.

We spoke to Kim about motherhood, hormones, mental load and the radical act of relaxing.

Let’s start with nightfall. What does a typical evening look like for you now - and how has it changed since launching Clementine?

I have two boys, 11 and 7. They are very loud, very competitive and very boisterous - so our evenings are full-on.

I work from home, and once they’re back from school, I completely down tools. I realised I have to be fully present. If I try to half-work and half-parent, I just add more fuel to the chaos.

We eat dinner early - around 5pm. I love that. I hate going to bed with a full belly. My husband cooks and I do the transition from school to home: washing muddy kit, homework checks, all that jazz.

We’re screen-free during the week, so between 5pm and 8pm it’s homework, board games or just pottering around.

We always read with the boys in bed - even our 11-year-old. We’re big readers and that ritual feels important.

After they’re asleep, I’ll usually work for another hour. Then my husband and I watch an episode of something together. We’ve just finished Andor.

While we watch, I stretch for about 20 minutes - I loooove stretching - and then I do facial massage, cupping and hand massage. It completely shifts my nervous system.

We’re in bed by 10pm. Always physical books. I sleep with an eye mask, and the room has to be freezing cold - I’m peri-menopausal and hotttt.

For me, everything before bed determines how well I sleep.

Sleep can feel like a battleground for so many women. What’s your relationship with sleep now, and has it always been that way?

It’s definitely evolved.

I used to dread bedtime because the moment my head hit the pillow, everything from the day would catch up with me. I was so wound up.

Now, I’ve made peace with imperfect sleep.

I still wake up in the night, at least a few times a week, but I don’t get in a pickle about it anymore. I remind myself that relaxing is better than nothing. I’ll breathe, repeat my affirmations, “I am a good sleeper”, and more often than not, I drift back off.

I’ve also been using the kip&glow Sleep Tape for the past few weeks and I’m honestly a bit shocked at how well they work.

I still wake up sometimes because of restless legs, but I’m able to fall back asleep much more easily now. I actually left them at home by accident recently and really noticed the difference - I was desperate to get back and use them again.

And if sleep is still a bit broken? I nap the next day. Guilt-free. That mindset shift has been huge.

You’ve been open about struggling with anxiety. How did that shape Clementine?

I’m open now. I wasn’t always.

Years ago, during my corporate marketing career, I had a breakdown. I developed social anxiety and had panic attacks almost daily for years. At my worst, I thought I’d have to stop working.

Hypnotherapy was a turning point.

But something else changed things too - telling people. Telling my boss. Telling the women I worked with that I wasn’t always confident, that I felt low.

That honesty was such a relief.

And what I realised was: so many women were struggling. With sleep. With stress. With confidence wobbles. With low mood.

That’s when the idea for Clementine started forming.

Building it while I was still working became part of my recovery. It was thoughtful. Creative. Fun. It gave me something hopeful to focus on.

We often say “a good night makes a great morning.” What’s your non-negotiable morning ritual?

I actually think winning the morning helps you sleep better at night too.

For me, it’s sitting down for breakfast with my family - not rushing it. It’s loud and chaotic but it anchors me.

Fresh air is another. Whether it’s a walk, the gym, or just the school run, I need to go outside.

And coffee. I only have one, so I really savour it.

If I skip those things, my day feels wobbly.

Hormones, parenting, burnout… What do you wish more people understood about the mental load women carry into the night?

We carry things that aren’t always ours to carry.

Mood manager. Birthday organiser. Chief doctor. Keeper of everything.

But I’ve realised I rush in too quickly to grab everything before it hits the floor.

What would happen if I didn’t? What if it’s not all mine to hold?

The second piece is learning to “dump, park or delegate” before bed.

We used to do that in bed - which meant my husband wanted to read and my brain was buzzing.

Now we check in before we start watching something. Five minutes. A quick rant. A list.

You can’t hold everything in and expect it not to impact your sleep.

Let’s talk real rest. What helps you feel truly restored?

I’m realistic. I don’t believe you need a holiday to repair your nervous system.

For me, it’s daily rituals.

Going outside every day. Moving my body. Lifting weights. Seeing friends weekly. Reading. Date nights monthly. Brushing my hair slowly. Massaging my hands at night.

And boundaries. Constant boundary checks.

I don’t feel guilty prioritising those things - because if I don’t, it’s not fun for anyone.

Clementine’s tone is gentle yet powerful. How intentional was that?

Very intentional.

I don’t like being told what to do. The world is loud enough.

So instead of “do this”, we ask questions. We invite women to sit with things and come to their own conclusions.

The ‘shoulds’ erode confidence.

Women don’t need more of that.

What’s one habit you’ve let go of that improved your nights?

Bringing the mental download into bed.

Now we “dump and delegate” earlier. We also talk about our day at the dinner table, the boys included.

It gets things off my chest before I hit the pillow.

Many women in midlife struggle with hormone-related sleep disruption. Have you seen that in your community?

Absolutely. That’s me too.

Our most popular Clementine sessions are:

  • Unwind and Escape Overthinking
  • Sleep When Your Mind Won’t Switch Off
  • Release Neck & Shoulder Tension

Women hold so much in their jaw, face and shoulders.

Sleep is foundational. It impacts what you eat, how you move, how you show up.

It sets the tone for everything.

Clementine feels like a quiet rebellion against hustle culture. Was that intentional?

Not at first. It evolved.

Our priority was offering simple solutions for stress, sleep and confidence.

But as hustle culture has grown louder - toxic productivity, striving for things that don’t matter - what we offer does feel quietly rebellious.

If you could whisper one thing to every woman lying awake at 3am, what would it be?

Relax.

Relaxing is good.

I can relax.

On repeat.
